HAVANA, June 19 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén) - Anubac, a disinfectant
manufactured in Cuba has been withdrawn from the market without an explanation.
Clerks at drug stores say it's not effective.
Anubac had been promoted as a potent germicide, water purificator and
disinfectant. A physician said: "It doesn't protect because it is not a
good germicide. People start feeling confident, lower their guard, and that's
why many parasites proliferate. The product is not really harmful, but it
doesn't have the expected effectivenenss."
Anubac was a chlorine-based product, which Havana residents evidently used
in trying to cope with the city's deteriorated water supply system. After years
of neglect, the water supply pipes pick up contamination from waste pipes and
other sources. The Havana aqueduct is over 100 years old and is operated by a
joint Cuban-Spanish venture.
