HAVANA, June11 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba Voz) - Local
authorities in Vueltas, in central Villa Clara province, issued an order
prohibiting farmers from selling milk products.
Also included in the order are self-employed workers who use milk products
in making pizza or other foods. "Pizzas are made with mayonnaise. They
cannot contain cheese because, by local law, its use is forbidden to private
parties," said one self-employed worker.
Local cheese producers find it necessary to send their production toward the
capital to sell. "They have to risk fines and jail terms and having the
cheeses confiscated, but they can't lose their job," said one knowledgeable
source.
"We take approximately 40 pounds of cheese on every trip to Havana. We
walk the streets as late as necessary to sell the cheeses, and we have to run
the risk of having the merchandise confiscated, buth there is no other option,"
said one woman.
She added: "We don't understand why in Havana the self-employed are
allowed to use cheese in their pizzas and in Vueltas they aren't."
