MATANZAS, June 6 (Caridad Díaz Beltrán, Lux Info Press) - Six
men presumably implicated in the ill-fated boat trip that took Elián González
to the U.S. have been formally charged after 18 months in jail.
The six, charged with "illegal exit from the national territory," "abuse
in discharging duties," and "illicit economic activity," could
face jail terms of between three and seven years and fines of between 2,000 and
5,000 pesos. Their trial is said to be set for the month of July, behind closed
doors and under extreme security measures at the Popular Municipal Tribunal in
Matanzas.
