MATANZAS, June 3 (Miguel Sigler Amaya, Movimiento Independiente Opción
Alternativa) - Esmeralda Leyva, a member of the Communist Youth Union, the Cuban
Communist Party's youth organization, won 500 dollars in an essay contest
sponsored by U.S.-based Radio Martí and now her correligionaries are
threatening to kick her out of the organization.
Leyva, a resident of Unión de Reyes, in Matanzas province, entered an
essay in the contest "Awaiting a New 20th of May." That date is to
Cuba what July 4th is to the U. S. The radio station is affiliated with the
Voice of America and was established to beam news and commentary into Cuba,
where access to broad-based news is tightly controlled by the government.
Leyva was summoned to an extraordinary session of the Communist
organizations after a Party militant named Rebeca told her that "It is
inconceivable that a Communist Youth militant would participate in a contest
organized by the counterrevolution. This will cost you."
Leyva says "My economic situation is desperate; that's why I
participated in the radio contest. I have to earn a living somehow."
