Havana, 24 of December (Carmelo Diaz Fernandez, APSIC / www.cubanet.org) -
63 years old Cuban political prisoner Cecilio González, has spent longer
than a week on a hunger strike and fears for his life.
González began the protest on December 15th in the
Combinado del Este prison, in La Habana as a "desperate act to demand the
medical attention he needs", said human rights activists.
According to reports from the prison, González presents eyesight
injuries and genital and oral eruptions.
Relatives of González agreed when expressing that his physical state
is very poor, reason why they consider that the hunger strike and the diseases
could kill the inmate.
González, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison for a presumed act
of terrorism in 1996, lives in building 4 North, third floor, cell #1, of
Combinado del Este penitentiary.
According effective national norms and to the ONU's
Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of
Prisoners, prison authorities are in the obligation to give medical
attention to all prisoners.
Note: Cuban government does not allow UN's special relators to
enter Cuban prisons.
