The Cuban government has ordered that eggs no longer be sold in dollar stores.
The measure was adopted two weeks ago, but it wasnt published until
November 30.
Managers of the dollar stores have been instructed to tell customers eggs
are not available "due to the special conditions experienced by the country
after hurricane Michelle."
Eggs were available in the dollar stores at 0.10 dollar each, or 2.60 pesos.
The same eggs could be bought, subject to limitations and availability, under
the food rationing system, at 0.15 peso each.
"I have visited more than 30 dollar stores searching for eggs and I
havent found any," said a woman who was visibly upset. "Since
July, we can only get six eggs per month under the quota, when years ago we
could get twice that many."
A man who makes a living making and selling pastries that require eggs,
said, "Im paying three pesos for an egg. What can I do? I cant
find them anywhere and I cant stop making the pastries. If I sit and wait
for the government to reestablish the egg supply, my family will starve."
Another man said, "The decision by the government to stop selling eggs
in the dollar stores is not popular. Its always the same. This is a
prelude to something worse."
