HAVANA, December 4 (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) -
Dissident Isabel del Pino revealed here that a shipment of medicines from Spain
intended for victims of hurricane Michelle has attracted the attention of State
Security personnel.
Del Pino said that a State Security officer who says his name is Chao paid
her what he called a "prophylactic visit," stressing that his
department knew about and had all the information about the donated medicines.
The shipment was sent by Medicines Without Borders, a Spanish organization
based in Valencia, and was not in any way sent surreptitiously, said del Pino.
It includes vitamins and analgesics.
"I have received aid of this type many times, from Spain as well as
from other European countries, and we havent had any problems with any of
the medicines," said del Pino.
Del Pino said officer Chao told her that perhaps some of the medicines could
be out-of-date and cause adverse reactions in their intended recipients, and
exhorted her to hand them over to the medical authorities in the area.
"We trust Medicines Without Borders fully, and in any case we will get
the medicines donated by this Spanish organization to their intended recipients,
the victims of hurricane Michelle," said del Pino. The Cuban government,
she added, has not provided aid to Michelles victims.
According to del Pino, the political police has reacted threateningly
because the government is afraid of not being able to control the aid to the
hurricanes victims. She said any donations intended for them are welcome,
no matter where they come from.
