CAMAGÜEY, November 30 (Carlos Brizuela Yera, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) - "I
have been working here for ten years, and never have the bathrooms been in such
a sorry state as you can now see," said Ramón Álvarez Rodríguez,
the man in charge of cleaning the bus station in Ciego de Ávila, in
central Cuba.
Álvarez added, "There hasn't been running water for four months.
The odor is so unbearable that every traveler that uses the bathrooms comes out
complaining."
Indeed, the odor transcends the terminal proper.
"The odor can be perceived from across the street," said Carmen
Toledo, another employee. "People complain endlessly. Many have notified
the local authorities, but the problem remains unsolved. If this goes on, I'm
going to have to find another job, because I can't take this anymore,"
continued Toledo.
Clogged and leaky pipes are the source of the problem, but repairs are not
forthcoming, complain neighbors who are also affected by the foul smell.
Álvarez said he has to periodically hand-carry buckets of water in
just to flush the toilets.
