HAVANA, November 30 (Caridad Cristina Alvarez, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Thirty street peddlers were arrested and fined for "engaging
in illegal economic activities" November 29 in Alquízar, a town
south of Havana.
The thirty regularly travel to Havana to sell fruits, vegetables, eggs, and
other produce not normally available in the capital. Reportedly they sell door
to door and have established clienteles.
Early on November 29, they boarded a bus at "La Europa" farm,
where most of them live, in the Guanímar to Alquízar road. At 5:15
a.m., police diverted the bus to the police station and held them until the
chief arrived at 8:00 a.m.
At that time, they were fined unspecified amounts and warned they were
engaging in illegal economic activities.
