Beating sends activist to the hospital

CAMAGÜEY, Noviembre 30 (Normando Hernández, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) - A beating by police sent human rights activist Yurisan Santiesteban, 26, to the hospital.

"Santiesteban has bruises all over, and a possible fracture of his right cheekbone," said Ezequiel Morales Carmenate, of the Pro-Human Rights Party in Las Tunas.

Santiesteban was reportedly beaten by police in Puerto Padre, and is now in "Guillermo Domínguez" hospital there.

According to reports, on November 27 two men visited him at the hospital and tried to dissuade him from accusing the policemen who beat him. One of the men, according to the report, is an officer of the Technical Investigations Department known as "Raulito."

Santiesteban's relatives have tried to lodge a judicial complaint, but authorities have not accepted it.
