Ex-police captain dies trying to reach American base

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, April 24 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) - A retired captain of the Cuban police’s Technical Investigations Department, Ernesto Navarro Sarmiento, 55, died April 10 when he tripped a mine trying to reach the U. S. naval base at Guantánamo Bay. This was reportedly Navarro’s third attempt to leave Cuba.

One of the two men accompanying Navarro at the time, Roberto Ferrer Rivera, 42, is believed to have reached the base. The other, Diosmede Aponte Martínez, 53, was captured by Cuban frontier guards and is being held in Guantánamo.

Navarro was a resident of Santiago de Cuba. When he was on active duty with the police he worked the narcotics beat, neighbors said.
