Jailed journalist denied parole

MATANZAS, April 24 (Caridad Díaz Beltrán, Lux Info Press) - Cuban prison authorities denied jailed Cuban journalist Bernardo Arévalo Padrón’s parole petition, at least until October, because, said his wife, "they want to force him to submit to reeducation and change his ideas."

Arévalo, 36, the founder of the Línea Sur press agency, is serving a six year prison sentence for "disrespect": he wrote that Fidel Castro and Carlos Lage, another top government official, had lied in an interview with a foreign radio station.

Amnesty International has declared Arévalo a prisoner of conscience.
