HAVANA, April 19 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén) - Patients who need clinical
tests find them hard to come by due to a shortage of reagents at medical labs.
"Neither in Tarará, where I live, nor in the Guanabo polyclinic,
can they test my blood sugar because they dont have the reagents,"
said Ramona Muñiz Hernández.
"Im a diabetic and Im generally very sick. I called the
polyclinics in Alamar and Guanabacoa and they told me the same; they dont
have the reagents, they are not even available in the Hermanos Ameijeiras
hospital, which is supposed to be the showcase for health care services. They
finally told me that if there were any there, it would be in the second floor,
where they care for foreigners, in dollars," said Muñiz.
Muñiz added that an acquaintance of hers who lives in Santa María
del Mar and who is also a diabetic was in poor shape a few days ago. "He
was dizzy and he doesnt know if his sugar level is high or low, because he
hasnt been tested."
"Diabetics need these tests periodically, sometimes daily, but what we
need here the government send abroad," she concluded.
