PINAR DEL RIO, April 18 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - A total of
106,000 workers were employed by the Ministry of Agriculture to bring in the
tobacco crop in Pinar del Río province, a number classified as "out
of proportion" by independent analysts and as "efficient" by
Agriculture officials.
Experts in the field consider 1.24 workers per hectare appropriate; the
28,584 hectares planted in tobacco in the province needed 3.7 workers per
hectare.
Official figures show that 29 percent of the total were agricultural
workers, 35.4 percent were farmers or affiliates of cooperatives, and 35.6
percent were laborers occasionally taken out of other areas to increase
productivity.
