HAVANA, April 16 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) - Several
areas of Havana regularly go without running water. The ongoing drought and
chronic breakdowns in the water supply infrastructure have been cited as
factors.
"We havent seen water come out of a spigot for many years,"
said one resident of Old Havana municipality.
Another resident added, "The situation is dramatic because there is no
indication that there will be a solution; we have heard promises for years
without any positive results."
Residents make do with water carried in cans or tankers. Private suppliers
charge 5 pesos a bucket. Tankers supplied by the local government cannot be
relied upon to make regular deliveries.
