PINAR DEL RIO, April 16 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - Inmate
Guillermo Alberto Alea Acosta, 34, died early this month in the prison known as
"Kilo 5½" (5½ kilometer) in Pinar del Río province,
due to lack of medical attention. He was serving a five year sentence for
illegal slaughter of cattle.
Alea was suffering from a cardiac ailment and had been transported to the "Abel
Santamaría" hospital in the city of Pinar del Río. There, for
no apparent reason, he was not attended and was sent back to prison, where he
died less than 24 hours later.
Officials of the Directorate of Jails and Prisons of the Interior Ministry
have not made
any statements about Aleas death.
Human rights activists in Cuba have repeatedly denounced the conditions in
Cuban jails, citing among other factors the lack of medial attention. The
International Committee for the Red Cross is routinely denied admission to Cuban
jails.
