HAVANA, April 13 (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad) - Patients in the
Arroyo Naranjo district of Havana who needed an ambulance on Saturday, April 7,
learned that the one available vehicle had a flat tire and that the people in
charge had no dollars to have it repaired.
According to administrators at the "Julián Grimau"
polyclinic, the ambulances tires are tubeless, which means they must be
repaired at dollar-denominated garages that service the tourist trade. On
Saturday, according to one official at the polyclinic, "There were no
directors present who could authorize a dollar transaction."
