SANTIAGO DE CUBA, April 13 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) - An administrators
decision to limit the sale of plantains to two pounds per person at a government
rationed food outlet caused a near-riot in Moa on April 4.
The administrator of Placita #6 decided to cap sales at two pounds per
person when he realized the stock on hand would not be enough for the number of
people waiting in line.
Tempers flared when customers learned of the restriction on what has become
a staple item in the local diet. Some openly criticized the inefficiency of the
local government in supplying the average Cubans market basket. Even so,
many returned home with no plantains at all.
