MATANZAS, April 12 (Caridad Díaz Beltrán, Lux InfoPress) - The
"Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy" hospital in Colón, central
Matanzas, the regional hospital for approximately 100,000 people, is in such
state of decrepitude that there are rumors that it will be closed down.
A visit to the hospital reveals:
The elevators have not worked for months. Patients have to be
hand-carried up and down the stairs.
The bathrooms are overflowing with waste water. The only facility in
working order is
usually overflowing with excrement itself.
In the second floor Gynecology wing an addition has been under
construction for years. The construction area has become a dumping ground for
trash and food waste for employees and patients alike.
There is usually no water for several hours every day.
The steam boilers are out of order.
The linens have to be taken to the next town to be washed.
On the third floor mens ward, bed No. 9 is propped up by a
construction block and a piece of timber.
Bed pans have long since been substituted by old plastic bottles.
Most medicines are in the out of stock list.
Yet, last year, the director of the hospital, Dr. Alejandro Piedra,
authorized a 30,000 peso purchase of landscaping plants that were left in the
yard and subsequently taken home by hospital workers and managers.
