The Cuban national soccer team is a step closer to playing on Memorial Day weekend at the Orange Bowl.

Cuba advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa Caribe tournament with a 3-0 win at Guyana on Sunday, and remains the only unbeaten team in Group One.

The eight quarterfinalists play May 16-21 at Trinidad and Tobago, and the final four advance to the semifinals in Miami on May 27. The championship game is May 29 at the Orange Bowl.

The other teams with Cuba and Guyana in Group One are the Dominican Republic and St. Martin.

Cuba defeated Guyana with a 40th-minute goal by Alexander Cruzata, a 69th-minute goal by Serguei Prado and an 89th-minute goal by Jorge Stevens.

"There is no doubt that this was our best performance of the competition. Guyana was the most difficult team for Cuba,'' Cuban coach Miguel Company told Stabroek Sport, a Guyana newspaper.

Cuba beat Dominican Republic 3-1 in its first game and struggled to edge St. Martin 1-0 in its second match.

CHACON HONORED

Fusion midfielder Alex Pineda Chacón, a Honduran player acquired from Olimpia in the offseason, was named MLS Player of the Week after his two-goal debut in Saturday's 2-1 win over Colorado.

Chacón entered the game as a substitute in the 60th minute and scored two goals in the next 12 minutes. "It was a dream debut, a magical night,'' Chacón said.

Eight minutes after coming onto the field, Chacón netted his first goal. Four minutes later, Chacón scored the game-winner for the Fusion.

AUSSIES WIN 22-0

Australia set a record for the most one-sided international win in FIFA history, beating Tonga 22-0 at Coffs Harbour, Australia, in an Oceania Group 1 qualifying match for the 2002 World Cup.

Coventry City's John Aloisi scored six goals as Australia broke the previous mark set by Kuwait when it beat Bhutan 20-0 in an Asian Cup qualifier last year.
