NEW YORK, Apr 9, 2001 -- (CTK - Czech News Agency) The Czech proposal for
the UN resolution on human rights violation in Cuba will have no impact on
Czech-American relations, newly-appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic
Craig Stapleton said today.
In its resolution on Cuba drafted by Foreign Minister Jan Kavan the Czech
Republic condemned the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba.
The USA has criticized this. Stapleton also said that the goal of his
mission in the Czech Republic would be strengthening of American-Czech relations
and helping the Czech Republic integrate with European structures. He added that
as an entrepreneur he would be interested mainly in the development of business
relations but would also pay attention to the development of cultural and
political relations.
He said he would like to start working in the Czech Republic at the
beginning of summer, in the best case on July 4, when the USA celebrates the Day
of Independence. Stapleton was appointed by U.S. President George Bush on
Friday. He is yet to be approved by the Senate.
Democrat Stapleton has been director of the Marsh and McLennan consulting
company since 1982. He is a graduate from Harvard University and lives in
Greenwich in Connecticut. His wife is a cousin of Bush's father. He had played
in the Texas Rangers baseball team together with the current U.S. president.
