Athens News, Friday , 30 March 2001. No. 12903

ATHENS Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos held talks with Cuban President Fidel Castro on March 28, during his official visit to Havana at the invitation of the city's mayor. Castro expressed a wish to visit Greece during the 2004 Olympics and accepted an invitation extended by Avramopoulos. During the talks, the Cuban leader referred to his country's difficult relations with the US and the consequences of the continuing embargo. Avramopoulos and Havana Mayor Conrado Martinez Corona signed an agreement for cooperation between the two capitals. After Cuba, Avramopoulos visited Panama before flying to the US on March 29 for contacts with New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and representatives of the Greek-American community.
