Four Poultry Farms Closed For Lack Of Chicken Feed

ARTEMISA, April 25 (Rafael Peraza, APO) - Four poultry farms are being shut down in this town just outside of Havana due to the scarcity of cereal needed to produce chicken feed.

Officials of the National Poultry Authority directed that the birds be disposed of because some of them were beginning to die for lack of food.

A truck driver said that the fattest ones are being taken to the slaughterhouse for eventual consumption by tourists. Those weighing two to three pounds are being sold in Havana at from 20 to 30 pesos, and the scrawniest are being distributed to hospitals and child care facilities.

Meanwhile, some of the administrators of the farms, who have State issued cars, are using them as taxis at night to make ends meet.
