Attention Focused On Problems With Mail

Jorge Diego Rodríguez, APIC

HAVANA, April - Late and lost mail are still areas of concern in spite of human and material resources applied to the postal service in the recent past.

A resident of Milagros 565 in Havana issued a public demand for daily supervision of mail distribution. He specifically cited the distribution facility at Cien and Boyeros, where delays and damaged mail are prevalent.

Mail coming from abroad sometimes is delayed up to six months and mail between Havana and the provinces takes correspondingly longer to deliver than the three to seven days authorities estimate it should.

Another complain centers on the delays in delivering the exit visas issued by the immigration authorities. These frequently take between 15 and 21 days to be delivered within the city of Havana, and in some cases have taken up to a month according to mail carriers themselves.

Security in mail collection boxes in the street also remains a concern. Young children are evidently able to slip their arms into the boxes and steal the mail waiting to be collected.
