HAVANA, April 18 (Mijail Barzaga Lugo, ANC) - Misleydis Trujillo Rey, 22, lost her baby two weeks ago because no one could find an ambulance to take her to the maternity ward.
Trujillo was at a maternity home in the outskirts of Havana because hers was considered a high-risk pregnancy when she started getting birth pains at 2 p.m. The staff at the center tried to procure an ambulance to transport Trujillo to the hospital. By 6:30 p.m., with no ambulance in sight,
Trujillo and a nurse started toward the hospital on foot, trying to hitch a ride as they went.
She arrived at the "Hijas de Galicia" hospital after 7 p.m., where she underwent emergency surgery. In spite of all efforts, doctors were not able to save the baby. A physician who would not use his name said: "If the patient had been transported to the appropriate medical
center on time, there would have been no loss of life."
