HAVANA, April 17 (Marvin Hernández, Cuba Press) - The smoke and stench from garbage burning operations in the local dump are affecting a part of the population of Matanzas, a city about 60 miles east of Havana.
Public Health officials have reported an increase in respiratory diseases among the residents of the "El Naranjal" neighborhood, near the city dump.
The smoke cloud from the burning also affects the Carlos Marx vocational school, with 2500 students, the Satrunino Lora hospital, the AIDS sanatorium and the clinic.
Responding to complains by the neighbors, the waste management authorities say that they lack the equipment to dispose of the refuse in any other way and must continue burning it.
