Coffee Smuggling Meets Market Demand

HAVANA, April 17 (Melanie del Río, CPI) - In spite of government attempts to prevent it, smuggling coffee from one province of the island to another endures, said one clandestine wholesaler in Havana.

Many of those who traffic in coffee transport the beans from the eastern provinces to Havana, risking confiscation and fines starting at 1,000 pesos.

There are a number of clandestine coffee roasting facilities in Havana operating round the clock. They mostly supply small family-owned cafeterias, according to the wholesaler.

Coffee sells for between U.S.$6.10 and 6.35 (122 to 127 pesos) a pound whereas smugglers sell it at U.S.$1.50 (30 pesos) a pound.
