Contaminated Water Brings On Hepatitis Outbreak

CIEGO DE AVILA, April 14 (Juan Carlos González Leyva, FAPDH) - A hepatitis outbreak has been detected in this area of central Cuba, affecting mostly students at the secondary school in Vicente

township.

The students were performing their prescribed agricultural service (30 to 45 days in which students live in the countryside to perform agricultural labors) in Los Ceballos when they were prematurely returned home to be tested at the Central Clinic in Ciego de Ávila. Those who have tested positive for the disease are receiving treatment.

The drinking water in the region is contaminated; in some cases one can see animal excrement in it.
