Unfinished Construction Causes Respiratory Difficulties

MATANZAS, April 11 (Rodolfo Damian, Cuba Press) - Residents of the Playa neighborhood here are experiencing increased respiratory dificulties as a result of the dust coming from unfinished street construction work.

Public works crews buried storm drains under some streets in November and when it came time to cover them, did not have the concrete slabs to do the job. They then filled the ditches with fill and left.

Since then, there has been a higher incidence of asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory diseases.

Residents of Aballí Street sent a letter to the "Open Frequency" radio program asking that something be done, even if only spraying water to keep the dust down, but, so far, have had no results. "Open Frequency" didn't listen... about the dust due to the sloppy workmanship of the public works crews," a neighbor complained.
