Mother Who Tried To Take Her Son To U. S. Faces Jail

HAVANA, April 11 (Carlos Castro Alvarez, Grupo Decoro) - Yenicey Tabares Barrera, of Alquízar, outside the city of Havana, faces up to ten years in jail for "illegal traffic in persons and counterfeiting of documents."

The mother tried to take her son with her to the U. S. but her former husband, the boy's father, did not give his consent. Tabares then obtained a new identity for the boy, listing as his father Marcial Lorenzo Álvaro Díaz, who authorized his exit from Cuba.

The plot unraveled and all those implicated are free awaiting trial. "Many families expose themselves daily to untold dangers to escape a system that, after four decades, only offers options such as jail, submission or misery, to give just some examples," said a resident of Alquízar, speaking about the case.
