Elián González: A Math Problem

HAVANA, April 10 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) - For the second time, the last question on a math exam in junior high school in Havana asks for an opinion about the Cuban rafter boy Elián González.

The parents question what is the relationship between a math test and a political problem. Cuba Verdad interviewed a number of these parents who chose not to use their names to protect their children and themselves.

"At first I didn't understand, then I thought I hadn't heard correctly, later I thought my daughter had confused her subjects. When I finally learned the truth, I was completely astonished." Housewife, 30.

"When my son asked me, what does Elián have to do with math? I didn't know what to say. I was totally confused." Laborer, 34.

"Well, at first I didn't understand, until I became convinced that it was math. Then I asked him: 'And what did you do, love?' He gave me a wise look and said: 'I had to make the grade, Mama; it seems that the teacher is crazy.' And we ended up laughing about it." Housewife, 32.
