Mamey, Nutritious But Unaffordable For Cubans

HAVANA, April 7 (Lucas Garve, CPI) - The price of mamey went up to 12 pesos in the produce markets.

"Today, to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, you must figure on spending 50 pesos, at least," said one shopper before giving up on the idea.

"To pay 12 pesos for a mamey seems a bit much," said one lady looking at fresh fruit in the produce market in La Víbora, in Havana.

Generally used to make shakes, the mamey has a very high nutritional content, which would make it a possible substitute for unavailable milk at breakfast. Although it is a very common fruit in Cuba, mamey is selling at prices that many Cubans find excessive.
