HAVANA (April 9, 2000 12:52 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - Cuba President Fidel Castro on Sunday embraced Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong, who arrived here Saturday to talk with Cuban officials and to attend a summit of the Group of 77 developing nations.
After the welcoming ceremony, both leaders held two hours of official talks in the Palace of the Revolution in Havana aimed at reaching deals on rice sales and cooperation accords on construction, science and sports, said the Prensa Latina news agency.
Luong was also to meet with the president of the Cuban National Assembly, Ricardo Alarcon, and visit economic and tourism points of interest in Havana and the nearby province of Matanzas.
On Wednesday, the Vietnamese leader will attend the first-ever summit of the G-77, a now 133-member bloc founded in 1964 that normally meets at the ministerial level.
The two communist-led nations have enjoyed close ties for decades.
Castro first visited Vietnam in 1973, then traveled there again in December 1995.
