Last-minute meetings are being held in Havana, Miami and Washington to prepare for Juan Miguel González's imminent arrival in the US to see his son Elián.
Lawyer Gregory Craig, who was last seen defending President Bill Clinton during his impeachment trial, flew to Havana on Wednesday to meet President Fidel Castro and the boy's father, whom he represents.
The US has issued visas to Mr González and five other Cubans, including Elián's half-brother and a teacher.
Visas for a further 22 people have been requested by the Cuban leader, but Cuba has said the father would come alone if he was allowed to return with his son immediately.
The US is seeking a way to transfer custody of the child from his Miami relatives to his father when he arrives without causing an uproar among the Cuban-Americans encircling his home in Miami.
While the Miami relatives now appear to accept such a move in principle, they remain far apart on how that would be done. |
