HAVANA, March 30 (Rev. Pedro Crespo, Grupo de Trabajo Decoro) - Three prisoners died in February as a result of mistreatment, poor sanitary conditions, insufficient food, and lack of medical assistance in the Valle Grande (Great Valley) prison in Havana.
Justino Planche Romero, 59, died February 10 after he was mistreated by a group of Internal Order Officers, one of whom wears badge No. 0729. The prisoner did not receive medical attention. The officers themselves decide which prisoners require medical attention.
Planche Romero was serving a three month sentence for disrespect to authority.
There are known instances of tuberculosis and parasites in Valle Grande, although the exact number of inmates affected is unknown. The prisoners themselves are concerned about the epidemics.
The Valle Grande prison has been known for some time as the "Death Valley" prison.
