PHNOM PENH, Aug. 13 (Kyodo) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen is to spend a
month making visits to the United States, Canada and Cuba from Sept. 1, an aide
to the prime minister said Friday.
He is scheduled to participate in a Francophone Summit in Canada and will
travel to Havana on the invitation of Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
In the U.S., Hun Sen will attend the 54th United Nations General Assembly
meeting in New York where he is to deliver an address Sept. 20.
The trips to the three countries will last for about 30 days.
Hun Sen's visit to the United Nations is aimed at stressing his government's
legitimacy to the international community. In July 1997, Hun Sen launched a
bloody coup that ousted his co-Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
Hun Sen was elected prime minister of Cambodia's coalition government last
year, while the prince, after a reconciliation following last year's election,
is now the coalition leader in the lower house of parliament.
