I have the
honor to convey the grateful sentiment of all Camagueyans, those who are here
and those who are not . . . the sick . . . [and] those unable to come because
they are in prison or working in industries of continuous production . . .
This noble nation deserves this visit and will never forget . . . your
gesture in coming here from such a distance, wearily traversing so many miles,
under conditions not favorable to you. . . . Only loveand a very great
lovehas worked this wonder, for which we will never cease to thank you.
This visit is very meaningful to us in this centennial year of our
independence, because we need to clarify ever more fully our national identity
by returning to our roots . . .
[We in the clergy] want to follow new roads, hand in hand with Christ . . .
the roads of peace, love and harmony, in the company of our people, who fear
division more than diversity, discord more than concord.
Bless us, Holy Father.
