MADRID, Spain
(AP) - The upcoming visit of Pope John Paul II to Cuba could be the beginning of
the end for Fidel Castro, a Spanish cardinal due to accompany the pontiff said
in an interview published Sunday.
"Cuba is the last Marxist bastion in America, and what happened with
the Berlin Wall and what happened in Poland could happen there,'' the Spanish
conservative daily ABC quoted Archbishop Ricard Maria Carles of Barcelona as
saying.
"The Papacy has never before had such moral force,'' the archbishop
said.
Carles will be part of the Spanish delegation accompanying the pope during
his Jan. 21-25 visit to the Caribbean island nation.
