WHEREABOUTS OF INDEPENDENT JOURNALIST IS UNKNOWN

  

HAVANA, May 23, 1997 (BPIC).- Independent journalist Olance Nogueras Rofes has been reported as missing by his family and friends, and they fear that he has been arrested by Cuban State Security.

It is believed that Nogueras Rofes, a reporter for the Independent Press Bureau in Cuba, was captured as he was returning to Cienfuegos, in the early evening hours of Thursday, May 22nd.

Last April 23rd, the State Security Department warned him not to travel to the capital city, under the threat of arrest for disobedience.

Last Wednesday, Rofes tried to attend a conference being held by the members of an American religious group Pastors for Peace, at the office of the Cuban Institute for Friendship With the People. Apparently, the police authorities detected his presence in Havana, and issued an order for his arrest.

His whereabouts are still unknown. His family and colleagues have Confirmed his disappearance.
