Workers complain they don't get paid
HAVANA, Cuba - March 9 (Reinaldo Cosano
Alén, Sindical Press / www.cubanet.org)
- Employees of the Ministry of Communications
subsidiary that does construction and maintenance
complain they don't get paid their salaries
in some cases, and that they get paid late
in others, making it hard for them to even
go to work.
"They owe us our salary for October
and November. We have brought this matter
up in meetings with the director, and we
have not had a satisfactory response. They
say whoever was supposed to deposit the
money hasn't done so, and that there is
a great deal of money and construction materials
missing, up to 38,000 dollars," said
César de Jesús Guerra, a worker.
Guerra said that February 10 was pay day,
but they didn't get paid until the 25th,
without explanation. As it was, said Guerra,
he had a hard time just making it to work.
"February 9, I did not have enough
money to go to work, and on the 10th, when
I expected some relief, they didn't pay
us. I spend about five pesos a day in going
to work, between transportation and lunch.
My salary is 240 pesos a month."
Guerra said materials are mishandled and
outright pilfered. "A few days ago
about 40 of us who are building apartments
at the corner of Infanta and Zanja Streets
had to stop working because we had no cement.
On Thursday they delivered 40 bags of cement;
that day we used six, and on the next day,
another six. On Monday, we had to stop work
again because there was no cement. Where
does that stuff go?"
Guerra blames mismanagement for the workers'
woes.
"We get a little breathing room when
we get paid extra for exceeding quota, but
when we don't because the company is not
solvent due to lack of organization and
mismanagement, we the workers are the ones
who pay the price," said Guerra.
