Bus service Cubans cannot afford

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba - February 22 (Pedro Enrique Martínez Machado, Agencia Santiago Press / www.cubanet.org) - The Bus Transport Association that was recently rennovated with new Yuton Chinese-made buses has ordinary travelers here screaming because they say they can't afford the fares.

The fare for a round-trip from Santiago to Havana is 338 pesos, compared to an average monthly salary in the range of 250 pesos. The minimum fare is 10 pesos, even for short trips of a kilometer or two.

An article February 17 in the Communist Party organ in Santiago, Sierra Maestra, published a schedule of the routes and their prices, and justifies the high prices by the high cost of the buses, the cost of spare parts, and fuel.
