transition from Castro already under way:

WASHINGTON, 6 (AFP) - Cuba has already
begun a transition from the nearly five-decade
rule by Fidel Castro, a US official said
Wednesday, a day after the veteran communist
leader appeared healthy in his first interview
in 10 months.
"There is clearly some form of transition
that is under way from Fidel Castro to his
brother," State Department spokesman
Sean McCormack said.
"Certainly we don't want to see a
transition from one dictator to another.
We think the Cuban people deserve better
than that," he said.
"A lot of other countries around the
world ... believe the same, so we are working
with other countries around the world to
make sure that as this takes place, that
you do not, in fact, have a de facto transition
from one dictator to another," he said.
McCormack did not comment on 80-year-old
Castro's taped interview with Cuban television
broadcast Tuesday, his first since handing
power to his younger brother, Raul Castro,
75, before undergoing complicated intestinal
surgeries.
Since then, he has only appeared in photographs
and videotape from his room, often with
allies like Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela.
In the interview Castro appeared to have
recuperated significantly, but he gave no
hint as to whether he would or would not
resume all the duties of Cuba's presidency,
as many thought he would.
During the past two months Castro has published
in official communist party newspapers articles
on various events and issues, including
several attacks on the US effort to promote
biofuels.
