Wife in Cuba Spying Case Begins Prison Sentence

Beatriz Canals, CBS4, June 1, 2007.

(CBS4) OCALA - The wife of a Florida International University professor accused of spying for the Cuban government has begun her three-year prison sentence near Ocala.

Elsa Alvarez pleaded guilty in December to knowing her husband was conspiring to be a Cuban agent, but failing to report the information to authorities.

Alvarez unsuccessfully sought to postpone her surrender date until mid-July. Her son says she has several health ailments.

Alvarez and her husband were arrested in January 2006 on charges of being unregistered agents for Cuban leader Fidel Castro's communist government. Both later pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Carlos Alvarez has been sentenced to five years in prison.
