Police presence on the upswing in Pinar del Rio province

PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba - July 7 (Rafael Ferro Salas, Abdala Press / www.cubanet.org) - An increase in police activity has lead residents of Pinar del Rio province to conclude that operation "Containment" has reached the province, said Felipe Gil, a local journalist.

Gil cited the frequency with which police stop and search passers-by as evidence that the previously announced government campaign was on.

"Any one walking down the street is subject to search and seizure," said Gil. "I saw police stop a little old lady who was carrying three bottles of honey and, after confiscating the honey under charges of hoarding, fine her. No matter that she alleged that they honey was for a sick relative."

Some say they fear this state of affairs could become permanent.
