Collector of signatures for Varela Project threatened

HAVANA, February 16 (Ernesto Roque Cintero, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Members of the political police have told dissident Humberto Vigoe Chirino of San Cristóbal in Pinar del Río province that he could be put on trial if he did not stop collecting signatures for the Varela project.

Vigoe Chirino, 36 and the married father of two children, said that he was been stopped many times by the political police and given citations to appear at the police station.

"On February 6 I was cited by the sector police chief, Oscar Aspectrio Bocoul, who tried to get me to sign a document that said I was a potential delinquent," he said.

He said the main object of the police is to stop him from working on behalf of the Varela Project.

The project collects signatures on a petition calling for a referendum on democratic reforms.
