- A patient admitted to the Enrique Cabrera
Hospital, considered to be Cuba's national
medical center, twice has had an operation
for the removal of gall stones postponed
for lack of blood plasma and air conditioning
in the operating room.
According to information provided by family
members, the patient is a 42-year-old employee
of ETECSA, the state communications company.
They said that when he went to the hospital
September 4, he was told by the surgeon:
"We're in the same situation as July.
We don't have blood and we don't have air
conditioning in the rooms. We can't opertate
on you. You'll have to keep waiting."
The patient said to the surgeon, "If
I was a Venezuelan, you'd already have operated
on me"
Replied the doctor, "In this hospital,
we don't attend to Venezuelans."
