Neighbors take up a collection to repair
butcher's refrigerator
SANTA CLARA, Cuba, October
18 (Feliberto Pérez del Sol, Cubanacán
Press / www.cubanet.org) - Tired of walking
four miles to find refrigerated meat, neighbors
spent almost a year taking up a collection
to have the refrigerator at the nearby "La
Rampa" government butcher shop repaired.
Donating a peso at a time, the neighbors
collected the 800 pesos (about 40 dollars)
needed to repair the refrigerator, which
had broken down in the summer of 2003. The
average monthly salary in Cuba is just over
200 pesos a month.
The idea for the donations came from a
74-year-old neighbor named José,
who said he was tired of walking to another
government butcher shop with an operating
refrigerator where meat covered by the government
ration book could be bought at lower prices.
"La Rampa's" refrigerator was
repaired October 3. The butcher shop is
located at Kilometer 1 in a poor neighborhood
on the outskirts of Santa Clara.
"Because it was impossible to get
the state to solve the problem, there were
alternatives that were not welcomed by the
regime, but they were tolerated," said
Rogelio López Silverio, a farm worker.
