Opposition doctor makes appeal to Cardinal Ortega

HAVANA, October 5 (Roberto Santana Rodríguez / www.cubanet.org)- Opposition doctor Darsi Ferrer appealed this week to Cardinal Jaime Ortega to intervene with the government on behalf of two prisoners on a hunger strike.

Víctor Rolando Arroyo and Félix Navarro have refused food since September 24 and 21, respectively, at the Guantánamo prison.

"The Church asked its faithful to pray for the residents of New Orleans. Why is it keeping quiet and not acting publicly on behalf of these brothers in danger of physical and spiritual death," Ferrer asked in a letter dated October 3.

"We ask you to intercede with the authorities so that these people can receive treatment in accord with the minimum demands of the United Nations," the letter said.

The cardinal is the president of the Council of Bishops of Cuba.
