Signers of the Varela Project issued summons by the police

HAVANA, Cuba, September 30 (Adrián Leiva / www.cubanet.org) - Dozens of residents of the capital's Cerro district who signed the Varela Project calling for a national referendum have been issued summons by the police.

Some of those who responded to the summons said they were intimated into withdrawing their support for the Varela Project. They said they had feared government reprisals.

Under the Cuban constitution, a national referendum can be held if 10,000 citizens sign a request for one. The backers of the Varela Project, which calls for a series of democratic reforms, submitted 25,000 signatures to parliament.
