Woman selling artificial flowers for Mother's Day fined

HAVANA, Cuba - May 10 (Amarilis C. Rey, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - A 55-year-old nurse trying to supplement her income by selling artificial flowers for Mother's Day said police and government inspectors fined her 100 pesos and confiscated her merchandise.

The woman said she was detained on board a bus for several hours and noted she saw items such as pork, garlic, and other merchandise presumably also confiscated from other street vendors.

The woman, who earns 425 pesos a month (approximately 18 dollars), said she had made the investment in materials hoping to clear about 1,000 pesos she needs to buy building materials to repair her home.

After her arrest, the woman said "They took everything I had except hope."
